Each of these adult workshops is one to two hours and includes lecture, discussion, demonstrations, examples, and numerous handouts. Workshops are available at Jo Anne's classroom in Broken Arrow, and in the surrounding areas in Oklahoma. These workshops are only $10 each.

DEVELOPING YOUR OWN UNIT STUDIES

A unit study is an interdisciplinary approach—combining several subjects around a central theme. This may be a history period, a work of literature, or a special interest. There are many resources for pre-packaged units or moms may design their own; use books you already have and combine lessons for units or find new exciting resources. Either way, unit studies are the most enjoyable for both teacher and student!

RECORD KEEPING

There are two "denominations" of home educators: those grade and those who do not. Regardless of which camp you choose in the beginning, it is essential that you keep accurate records, including grades, during the high school years. These records will be the basis of preparing a transcript and satisfying college or employment requirements. However, this does not need to be an overwhelming task. Keeping a few accurate records will facilitate the process.

 PERSONALITY TYPES

God created each of us as unique individuals. However, there are four basic personality types which can be identified in most individuals. As we come to understand these personality traits, we can achieve a new level of relationship with the people around us. We can understand motives behind actions and find a way to allow each person to be the person God intended. By studying the strengths and weaknesses of each type, we can learn to value God's diversity in people as well as seeing the areas which need correction.

GOING TO COLLEGE

Colleges are becoming more "home school friendly" today. However, there are some steps you can take to design a "college-prep" curriculum and strengthen skills which will prepare your child for a successful college experience. Presenting well-prepared transcripts and records of achievements as well as learning to communicate in collegiate jargon makes the registration process smoother.

USING TIME LINES

Time Lines are versatile visual aids for literature, history, Bible, etc. This workshop includes suggestions for making, displaying, and storing materials. The handouts provide examples of many applications as well as various historic eras.

TEACHING GRAMMAR

Moms frequently feel insecure teaching grammar skills. Diagramming is intimidating; terminology is unfamiliar; relevancy is a challenge. This workshop discusses the purpose and necessity of grammar drills while learning how to incorporate Godly principles in language lessons.
Handouts include a list of terminology and guidelines for selecting effective curriculum.

TEACHING WRITING

Most moms and students shy away from writing assignments. Yet, learning to write effectively is an essential skill for communicating the Gospel to a hurting world. This workshop begins with a foundation of Scriptural reasons for writing. It also includes expectations for different levels, methods of teaching, resources, grading suggestions, motivation ideas, and integration with other subjects.

TEACHING LITERATURE

Studying a book is very different from just reading a book. It involves examining the world- view of the author and the fruits in his life. Research must be done on the spiritual, historical, and geographical setting. Godly principles direct us to analysis of the character qualities and behavior of the people. Reasoning from God's Word will reveal the theme which we can gain from the work. Building a notebook study of the work will build diligence and excellence in the student along with the details which are usually absorbed.

TEACHING OKLAHOMA HISTORY

State law requires students study Oklahoma history once in elementary and once in high school. However, many families do not have a sense of what is important and where to begin this study. There are many new resources which make these lessons interesting and beneficial. Handouts include suggestions for field trips, library books, and assignments.

GODLY CURRICULUM

Putting a memory verse at the bottom of the page does not make a text book Godly. There are specific criteria for identifying a Godly approach to education. It is possible to find Spiritual principles in any lesson — even math and grammar. Christian parents need to seek curriculum which uses Godly methodology and avoids humanistic approaches.

HOW TO DO A RESEARCH PAPER

Research papers teach many important academic skills (analytical thinking, composition, etc.) as well as developing character (compliance to authority, attention to detail, etc.) However, many students, and parents, are intimidated by the assignment. This workshop gives step-by-step directions and examples to lead the student through the process.

PRINCIPLE APPROACH TO A GODLY WORLD VIEW

The Principle Approach is a revival of the methodology of the Founders of this country. It produced a generation of men who reasoned from God's principles to produce the greatest country in the history of this world. We have an obligation to restore these principles to our children so that the Father can once again bless this country in its appointed work. The beginning of this work is to see history as HIS-story, God working out His plan with mankind.
